1.  BEGINNING USERS - Computer facts that you should know about to make your computing easier.

For 13 years, we have been helping companies and individual, small business computer users with their computer needs.  There is not a week that goes by that we do not have a person ask us about the most basic computer questions.  Below we will mention and answer a few of the most common questions.

  •

What should I do if my computer (pc) locks up (or my mouse doesn’t work)?

Remain calm! First make sure your computer is not trying to download or complete a task- this may lock your computer up temporarily. If this is not the problem try the following simple steps. (You may not need to go through all of the steps)

STEP 1-- Try to close the current program or file.

STEP 2--Simultaneously, press Control Alt Delete and select End Task. Eventually you will have a choice to shut down your computer. When you reach this box,  you can choose to either cancel or restart your computer. No result continue to step 2

STEP 3-- If your computer doesn’t respond with a few minutes and try again.

STEP 4--If your computer is still frozen press the off button on your computer and wait a few minutes. Then restart your computer. Some computers require you to push and hold the on/off button in for 30 seconds before the computer will turn off - Dell for example.

STEP 5--Turn your power switch off on your power protector and then turn it back on, next turn on your computer.

* Remember to save your files periodically. This will help to prevent losing data during a computer freeze.

2.  INTERMEDIATE USERS - Whether you are creating your own web site, paying someone to create a web site for you, or modifying your site, there are many tools you can purchase, borrow or rent that will make your web site better and easier to navigate for your visitors.  Here are some examples of the sites and tools we use when developing our site or customer's sites:

Part 2 of a 3 part series

Tools to borrow:

  • DHTML - Dynamic HTML scripts that you can borrow, with permission, and use on your web site.  They give you examples of the end result, tell you where to put the code, give you the code and even explain how to make minor modifications.  This site is a great resource.
  • Anfy - Some really neat effects using Java Applets.  They also tell you how to use the code, where to put it in your code and how to modify.  You need to see what they have done.  This is a fun site to visit and see what they have done.
  • Net Mechanic - This site will help you fix errors, view your web page in various browsers, help with search engine submission tips, speed up your site and other features.
  • Search Engine Watch - Probably the best, most up to date source for information on search engines on the internet.  You can subscribe but there is a wealth of information that is free.  Great Resource!

Next month we will tell you about tools to buy that we use on a daily basis.

3. ADVANCED USERS
  • In Photoshop- how do I reduce a file size, save and close . . with a touch of a button?

Photoshop and many programs allow you to use function keys to run macros, which enable you to do many actions with a touch of one button.

Here’s how . . . .

• STEP 1- Go to Actions palette

• STEP 2- Select new action

     - name it

     - select the desired function key

     - select the desired color (the action will be saved in the Actions palette)

• STEP 3- Click Record

• STEP 4- Go to Image, then Image Size

• STEP 5- Select desired size and close

• STEP 6- Go to File, Save

• STEP 7- Go to File, Exit

• STEP 8- Go back to Actions palette and in the pull down menu select Stop Recording

You can use the Action palette to create many effects, by touching only one key, saving you lots of time.

4. CUSTOMER'S REAL WORLD ISSUES - What our customers have been asking for over the last month.

Each month, we try to include a real world issue that our customers have requested.

Many of my customers have asked about search engines.  Which ones do I use and why.  Well, I use Google - almost exclusively.  It is easy to use and the results are usually very accurate.  The web site is www.google.com

A few pointers, if you enter cobb theatres then google will search for any site that has cobb theatres, cobb, theatres, theatres cobb.  If you type in "cobb theatres" with the quotes it will only search for the phrase "cobb theatres"  For most people this is all the information you need to begin using this search engine.

If you have a child that is looking for a picture of Babe Ruth enter "Babe Ruth" into Google and click search.  Then click on the Images tab near the top and you will get all the pictures of the Babe you will ever need.  Right click on the picture, left click on "Save Picture As" and note where the picture is placed on your hard drive.  You can now put it in your report.

If you go to the bottom of the page, any page and click on the "Services & Tools" link, you will see many other Google tools.  You will also find a link to the Google Toolbar.  This feature will add the search engine information to the menu information at the top of your browser and you will be able to search using Google, at any time without having to go to the Google web site.

There are many other features that you can explore on this page that can make your internet search easier and more productive.

Happy searching.
